The Pulse Within the Ground: The Rhythm of the Soul

Part of the series: The Rhythm of the Soul
Exploring how we live within the Love that holds us.

Essays in this series:

Across the ups and downs of ordinary life —
moments of clarity and confusion,
connection and disorientation —
I’ve been learning something about the soul.

If Reality is structured as Love —
steady as gravity, constant as I AM —
then what does it feel like to live inside that Love?

It feels rhythmic.

But not tidy.

The first time I walked a labyrinth — a winding path that slowly leads you to the center and back again — I believed the center was the goal. Like a bullseye. I imagined it as the place of arrival: closeness, clarity, spiritual steadiness.

At first,
the path crossed near the center.
I remember feeling close, connected, steady.

Then within minutes,
the path curved outward.
I found myself near the edge.
And I stopped.

Ugh.

“This is where I really am.”

Lost.
Disconnected.

There was shame in that moment — a quiet exposure.
The realization that my inner life was not where I thought it should be.

For a moment I simply stood there,
aware of the distance between where I hoped to be
and where I actually was.

And then something unexpected:

Permission.

Not permission to improve.
Permission to be.

“Yes. This is where you are.
And I AM here
.”

The center did not disappear.
But it ceased to be a target.

God was not more present at the hub than at the edge.
The hub may be stillness —
a moment where the music of the soul gathers and rests —
but the same Presence holds the entire path.

That day I began to understand something.

The spiritual life is not a straight line toward God.

It is a pulse lived within God.
A rhythm.
A dance.

The Rhythm of the Soul

Like a human heart, the soul contracts and expands.
It rests.
It strains.
It overflows.
It scatters.

Sometimes the rhythm feels strong and clear.

Sometimes it feels irregular.

Sometimes it feels like nothing at all.

Like listening to a symphony, the movements of the soul are always present — but at different moments we become aware of different melodies.

Our SoulRhythms include
mountaintop and valley moments —
and everything in between.

Searching when answers don’t come.
Speaking when words feel raw.
Sharing when we don’t feel we deserve rest.
Stretching when growth calls us beyond comfort.
Serving when Love overflows.
Scattered when we can’t see the forest for the trees.

If we pause and listen to our spiritual pulse, the soul often whispers things like:

“I’m not sure anymore.”
“I’m trying to figure this out.”
“My cup feels empty.”

At other moments we notice something different:

“I feel connected again.”
“My cup is filling.”

And sometimes the truth sounds like:

“I’m in a funk.”
“My cup feels broken.”

These are not failures of faith.

They are simply the soul telling the truth about where it is.

They are our lived experience of God through the changing lens of life.

And if Love is the Ground of Being, then every SoulRhythm — even the one that feels disordered — is already held within that Love.

Nothing in the movement of the soul places us outside the Presence that holds it.

We are welcomed as our soul searches — even when it doubts.
We are listened to as our soul speaks — even when it is angry.
We are communed with as our soul shares — even when rest feels unearned.
We are empowered as our soul stretches — even when growth feels uncomfortable.
We are developed as our soul serves — even when service feels small.
We are embraced as our soul scatters — especially when it feels lost or ashamed.

God does not meet us after we stabilize.

God meets us in the place we are.

If you feel far from God,
it is not because God has left.

Sometimes our lenses are clouded by circumstance.

So what can we do?

Pause.

Exhale.

Let the moment name its need
in an exhale of prayer.

Not to summon God.
God already is.

Prayer does not create Presence.
It clears the lens —
so we can recognize
and receive
the Ever-present Love
here with us.

Open Hands in the Mess

As with our rhythms,
our prayer takes many forms.

God welcomes them all.

My favorite posture of prayer has become
open hands.

Open hands release what we are carrying — fear, control, the need to understand.

And open hands receive what has always been here — mercy, presence, Love.

Like breathing.

We exhale what we cannot hold.
We inhale the life that is already given.

Release and receive.

A quiet rhythm of trust.

Recognize where you are — not where you wish you were.
Receive the Love that is present — even if you don’t feel it.
Respond with the smallest honest trust.
Release what you cannot fix.
Remember the Ground beneath your feet.
Rejoice — not because everything is good — but because Love is still here.

This is not bypassing pain.

This is staying.

When we resist our current rhythm, we experience friction.

When we consent to it, we experience coherence.

Not because life becomes easy.

But because we stop fighting where we are.

Trust becomes contentment.

Contentment begins
as we consent to Reality —
available
to Life already here.

Present
in,
with,
and through.

And presence — especially in the mess — becomes Love embodied.

A Field of Imperfect Walkers

We are not walking this rhythm alone.

Imagine a field of people — none of them perfectly centered.

One is Searching and exhausted.
Another is Sharing and steady.
One is Scattered and ashamed.
Another is Serving quietly.

The rhythm is messy.

But something circulates between them —
the flow of Life and Love,
Spirit moving in and through.

The one who is steady becomes refuge for the one who is scattered.

The one who is stretching becomes courage for the one who is afraid.

The one who is searching becomes honesty for the one who is pretending.

Need and gift begin to move.

Sometimes the rhythm of one soul steadies another
whose own rhythm feels lost.

Not because anyone is spiritually superior.

But because each person is consenting to where they are.

And Love moves through consent.

Always Within

Now I see differently.

The center of the labyrinth
is not a reward.

It is a reminder.

The hub may be stillness.
But the path — even the confusing stretches — is holy.

God is not more alive in the calm moments than in the chaotic ones.

We live and move and have our being within this Love.

Life is still unfolding.
Love is still at work.

Even here.

And slowly we begin to recognize
what it feels like
to live inside that Love.

The Pulse within
the Ground of Love
is not perfection.

It is faithfulness
in the rhythm you are in.

The music has been playing all along.

Love’s hand is open.
Love’s hand is inviting.

Come.

Let us dance
to the Rhythm of the Soul.

Reality as Love — The Ground We Stand On

There we explore the deeper question beneath these rhythms: What if Love is the deepest structure of Reality itself?

The journey begins with the Ground beneath our feet.
